Irv #4: Kellogg’s Pop Tarts: The Game

Irv the Octopus once again returns, this time reviewing Kellogg’s Pop Tarts: The Game!

In this rather simple, but tricksy trick-taking game, 2-6 players try to get their Pop-Tarts toasted or frozen in different combinations to rack up points, manipulating the assembly line through the action cards in their hands.  The first one to 30 points wins!

Each Pop-Tart is worth points on their own, but the real power is in “Bonus Cards”, which are gained from saving your appetite for a specific delicious assortment!

The game design is nicely printed, easy to read, easy to set up, each player gets their own “cheat sheet” for a reminder, and since all pieces are the same size card, fits in a nice, travel sized container.  Plus, they fully commit to the Pop-Tart aesthetic, down to the foil cover inside the box!  Irv really appreciated the attention to detail–A+!

According to Irv, the most important strategy of this game is controlling the “Line”.  You have to know where every card is and needs to go, and have a flexible strategy to get to that point.  During our gameplay, Irv kept his eyes glued to both the toaster and fridge sides simultaneously…an easy feat, since his eyes are on either side of his head.

His quick tentacles were snatching combos left and right, leaving us in the dust.  We actually had to remind him several times that you can STOP after 30 points.

Still, even though we lost, all of us agreed that this could be a fantastic addition to the game table, especially for smaller or more lighthearted sessions.  Unfortunately, we are currently unable to play any more because several cards have gone missing.

Irv’s only major complaint about the game was the flavor quality of the cards, as, even to an octopus’ refined palate, he could not distinguish any difference in flavor between the various cards…

…On a separate note, we have discovered why we’re missing cards.

Irv would also like to recommend that Kellogg’s include, in the next iteration, a working toaster/fridge apparatus, so that the winner can enjoy their captured cards promptly at the end of the game.  This will not only teach children basic cooking instructions (with parental oversight, of course–safety first!) but also add a special incentive to winning!

(Note: Be Game Social does NOT support consuming game products.  Save snacking for ACTUAL Pop-Tarts!)

In short, Irv happily recommends the Pop-Tart game for it’s quick, easy-to-learn mechanics and fast-paced gameplay, which would make a great opening snack for your next game night or game break…figuratively, of course!

Irv would also apologizes for the lack of direct quotes in this blog…his mouth was full.

Stay tuned for more “Irv Reviews” and more, now both on our website and Blogspot!
